"NASCAR Racing for a Higher Purpose"
"I tried for so much of my life and of my career to white knuckle it, steer the ship. It's been really fun for me the last couple years to just let God steer the ship. I'm just along for the ride."
That’s what Aric Almirola had to say after his second-place finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship Race earlier this month.
Almirola is a donor to The Signatry, and he's told us his journey of learning to live open-handedly when it comes to generosity. He credits his wife, Janice, with helping him discover the joy of trusting God with their giving.
In Sports Illustrated, he describes a similar journey through his career. Surrendering his career, like his finances, to God has helped Almirola find fulfillment in new ways. Only after he walked away from his own career in racing did he get the opportunity to race, not for his own fame, but under the banner of Joe Gibbs Racing, the team who gave him his start over 20 years ago.
Keeping Generosity in Focus: A Free Family Devotional
Every year, I commit to avoiding the hustle and bustle of the eight weeks leading up to the end of the year. Yet, at some point, the to-do list of Christmas cards, baking, shopping, parties, and travel can be hard to combat.
It may not be a common Christmas verse, but Psalm 27:4 always resonates with me in this season:
“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell
in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty
of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4)
Amid the busy-ness of the time of year, rather than looking down at the long list of obligations, let’s find ways to look up at the beauty of God.
If you’re looking for one small, regular reminder to celebrate the beauty and generosity of God, I recommend our 8-week family devotional on biblical generosity. Each week you’ll receive an email that walks through one biblical story of generosity, a few discussion questions, and a quick generosity activity that can adapt to your family’s season of life.
Subscribe today and you’ll receive a devotional for each of the eight weeks left in 2025.
CNBC: A Tax Law Change Means it’s Worth Another Look at C Corps
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted in July, expanded the benefits of qualified small business stock, changing the corporate structure calculation for many business owners.
This CNBC article summarizes the changes and how they might affect business owners looking to sell in the next few years. For C corps, “The new law raises the tax-free gain cap to $15 million ... It also lowers the holding period for the stock to three years from five years ... Additionally, more small businesses are eligible, with the asset cap lifted to $75 million.”
For business leaders looking to start, restructure, or sell their businesses, these changes could affect plans for the coming years.
If you’re planning to sell a business in the next few years, don’t forget there are also tax benefits available for donating part of the business before the sale! A nonliquid gift like private stock is a great way to stretch your charitable dollars while minimizing your taxes.
Coming November 25: "Set Free: A Cause Champion Documentary"
Join us on Tuesday, November 25 at 8:00pm CT, to watch how God used his people to break down barriers and shine the light of Christ in the darkest of places.
You'll meet the faithful people who walked alongside Tony Brown, Maverick City Music, Brandon Lake, and Kirk Franklin to bring Tony's vision to life: a group of songwriters entering a prison to record a live worship album with the incarcerated.
Set Free tells the story of how God multiplies generosity to carry the hope of Christ to the darkest places. It was an experience that shattered walls, both physical and spiritual.
We’ll see you at 8:00pm CT on November 25!
What Should You Really Donate This Winter?
If you’re planning to donate goods to a food bank or homeless shelter this season, make sure you know what’s needed before you start collecting! We’ve all experienced good intentions that don’t translate into meaningful help. Shelters and food pantries face the same challenge.
For example, some shelters may be able to refrigerate perishable items for their residents, while a food pantry might not. A food bank could be inundated with breakfast cereal but run out of powdered milk to go with it. Some nonprofits may just need cash to buy things in bulk—like one Kansas food bank that can buy $7 worth of food for every $1 donated.
Check the individual organization’s website for a list of what they really need. For example:
The Bridge Ministry (Nashville, TN) lists bottled water, diapers, and small pop-top canned goods as high-demand items.
Central Union Mission (Washington, D.C.) says they need diapers, school supplies, sheets & other linens, and specific clothing items in bulk from an Amazon Wishlist.
City Union Mission (Kansas City, MO) features specific, immediate needs including baby & toddler pants, paper towels, and canned tuna and chicken.
